Manager, Supporting Foundations

About the Manager, Supporting Foundations position:

This position will include two major components:

  1. Supporting Foundation Manager: Assisting in the management and stewardship of 10-15 Supporting Foundations, with the expectation that over the next 1 -2 years, s/he moves into the role of primary foundation manager for several of them.
  2. Development Officer: Secure campaign, supplemental, and Planned Gifts. Provide donor Stewardship/development for those associated with the foundations as well as others as assigned. This will include all generations of the family as well as individuals not associated with a foundation, addressing each as appropriate for their age, level of involvement, and interests. Stewardship will span varied activities and connections, from exploring grantmaking interest areas, first-time individual gifts to Federation, and through endowment/legacy development. The goal for all being a broader and deeper involvement with Federation and its agencies. This position will include an Annual Campaign assignment.

This position is full-time and reports to the Vice President, Supporting Foundations.

Essential Functions:

  1. Foundation Manager
    1. Become a trusted advisor and go-to staff member for foundation family members on any and all Federation matters.
    2. Provide professional support, information, and advice to portfolio of supporting foundations.
    3. Connect families and Trustees of foundations with the broader activities of the Federation including the Annual Campaign, events, missions and other engagement opportunities.
    4. Contact and confer with supporting foundation principals and family members about general grant-making interests and specific grant recommendations.
    5. Work with each family to facilitate the achievement of their philanthropic goals.
    6. Submit proposals to supporting foundations and seek funding for Federation priorities consistent with the Foundation’s mission statement.
    7. Solicit program information and funding proposals that respond to donor and trustee interests.
    8. Schedule and organize donor/trustee site visits as appropriate.
    9. Coordinate and arrange meetings of the Foundations; prepare materials for supporting foundation pre-meetings and annual meetings.
    10. Seek and distribute grant reports.
    11. Ensure Foundation grants and activities comply with applicable laws and regulations. Consult with Federation counsel as necessary.
    12. Collaborate with Finance Department to ensure smooth operation of grant payments, investment allocations, and reporting.
    13. Learn and understand the intersection of, and maximization of, giving vehicles and sources such as Donor Advised Funds, IRA Funds and endowment funds, both independently and as they relate to supporting foundations.
    14. Develop wholistic and comprehensive relationships with donors.
    15. Develop comfort level with the use of multigenerational tools and dynamics to be used with families and adapted for other purposes.
    16. Attend Federation and other community events.
    17. Manage all aspects of grant making consistent with Federation policies and procedures.
    18. Provide the highest level of customer service to community members.
  2. Development Officer
    1. Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward multiple generations of foundation family members and others, taking into account their individual desires and interests as well as the community’s needs and priorities. Create customized solicitation strategies based on strategic objectives of the Federation and the interests of the donor. Secure gifts to the Campaign, Supplemental gifts, as well as secure Legacy Commitments.
    2. Serve as the staff liaison for each assigned donor prospect, ensuring that each donor development plan encompasses the broad spectrum of Federation activity and that each donor is provided with technical planning and fiscal support in the creation and implementation of their plans. Work collaboratively with other members of the Federation staff and lay leaders, Federation partner agencies and synagogues to ensure the best outcome for the donor and the community.
    3. Participate fully in the Federation’s Campaign for Jewish Needs and manage a portfolio of campaign prospects and campaigners.

    Additional Duties/Responsibilities:

    1. Participate in ongoing professional development.
    2. Assist in all capacities as may be appropriate on behalf of Federation Development (community building and fundraising) efforts, including the Federation’s annual campaign.

    Education, Training and/or Experience

    1. Bachelor’s Degree required
    2. Master’s Degree preferred
    3. 2-5 years experience preferred
