Jewish Federation, Kol Israel Foundation Remember Holocaust with Yom Hashoah V'Hagvurah

The Jewish Federation of Cleveland and Kol Israel Foundation will honor Cleveland’s Holocaust survivors and remember those who perished during Yom Hashoah V’Hagvurah on Wednesday, April 23 at 6:30 pm at B’nai Jeshurun Congregation (27501 Fairmount Blvd in Pepper Pike). This event is free and open to the community.
In keeping with this year’s event theme, “Then and Now,” multigenerational members of Holocaust Survivors’ families – from Survivor to children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren – will tell their story during the program. Sean Martin, curator for Jewish History at Western Reserve Historical Society, will also give remarks on connecting the past trauma of the Shoah to the current rise in antisemitism seen today. Additionally, the event will feature:
- Candle-lighting by Holocaust Survivors and their families
- March of generations
- Procession of Holocaust-era Torah scrolls
“This year’s theme reminds us that the stories of Survivors must not only be preserved but shared across generations to combat hatred and ignorance,” said Erica Hirsh, Yom Hashoah event co-chair. “As Jew hatred continues to rise and the number of living Holocaust survivors decline, it is more important than ever to reflect on the lessons we can learn from this horrific time in Jewish history.”
