Jewish Federation of Cleveland Announces 2024 Class of Mandel Myers Fellows
Fellows receive college scholarships, professional development, mentorship while working at Jewish summer camps
The Jewish Federation of Cleveland announced today the 2024 class of Mandel Myers Fellows who worked as staff at select Jewish overnight summer camps. This year’s program featured the fellowship’s largest cohort yet with 87 fellows, growing from 67 fellows in 2023 and 54 in 2022.
The “Mandel Myers Fellowship Program” – funded by three-year grants of $1,800,000 from the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Supporting Foundation and a grant of $450,000 from the David and Inez Myers Foundation – was established in 2022 and enables Jewish overnight camps to attract and retain high-caliber staff, help students from Cleveland offset the costs associated with attending a four-year accredited university, and add professional development experience to the camp counselor role to make it more competitive with other internship opportunities. Returning overnight camp counselors will receive a scholarship of $5,500. First-time overnight camp counselors will receive a scholarship of $4,500.
“The Mandel Myers Fellowship Program was an amazing opportunity to enhance my leadership skills, broaden my scope of the Jewish community, and advance my professional development,” said Jaden Tsirlin, counselor at Beber Camp from Beachwood, Ohio attending Young Judea Year Course prior to starting at The Ohio State University. “Being in this fellowship has expanded my knowledge and my network. The Mandel Myers Fellowship improved my confidence as a leader and I also made great friends along the way.”
In addition to receiving a scholarship, participants were matched with one of 24 professionals in different career areas who serve as mentors in their field of interest. Throughout the three learning workshops for the fellowship, the professionals were present and led a session with their groups.
The Mandel Myers Fellowship Program is a program of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland and operates in partnership with Jewish Family Service Association and Foundation for Jewish Camp. For more information, contact Adam Hirsh at ahirsh@jewishcleveland.org or 216-593-2900 x212.
