HONOR GAYLE HORWITZ:
Gayle is an active volunteer with US Together, a non-profit that provides advocacy, education, and support services for refugees and immigrants. Last year, Gayle and her family “adopted” a Congolese refugee family new to Cleveland. Gayle has held drives to collect donations for the family’s apartment, including housewares, furniture, children’s toys and clothes, as well as for food and holiday gifts for many other refugee families in Northeast Ohio. An advocate for immigrants, Gayle was recently invited to present in front of the South Euclid City Council in favor of their “Welcoming City” resolution to ensure the safety of immigrants and refugees in the community. She encourages other families to join hers in this mitzvah of welcoming the stranger.

Gayle is a senior attorney with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. She serves on the boards of directors of the Cleveland Jewish News and Park Synagogue, and was founding President of the Northeast Ohio Chapter of the American Constitution Society, an organization that provides public education on civil rights issues. Gayle and her husband Matt Besser are the proud parents of Sam, age 3, and new baby Ashton.

ABOUT THE IRENE ZEHMAN AWARD:
The Irene Zehman Volunteer Award recognizes a woman, group of women, or a women’s organization whose efforts on behalf of the Cleveland Jewish community demonstrate the highest ideals and practices of volunteer service. The award was established in 1980 by Roslyn Z. Wolf and Judith Z. Sherman, both of blessed memory, in loving memory of their mother, Irene Zehman, who personified the attributes this award celebrates.

The Cleveland Chesed Center provides basic necessities to Jewish families in need. In addition to being a kosher food pantry, the Chesed Center distributes clothing, household supplies, and furniture. Donations will be collected at the Spring Luncheon.

Below is a list of needed items:

• New or gently used special occasion clothing and accessories (men, women, and children)
• School supplies (glue sticks, highlighters, pencil packs, spiral notebooks, two-pocket folders, and washable markers)

ABOUT SHARON TAL:
Sharon Tal graduated with honors with a degree in fashion design from the prestigious Shenkar College. Upon graduating, Tal jetted to Europe, interning under Alber Elbaz, head designer of Lanvin, then went on to work at Alexander McQueen as the head designer for embroideries. Staying true to her roots, Tal returned to Israel and is now the head designer of Maskit, a luxury women’s brand, originally launched in Israel in 1954 by Ruth Dayan (wife of Moshe Dayan, former Foreign Minister of Israel). In 2014, Tal received the Most Promising Designer Award at the Israel Fashion Industry Awards.

ABOUT MASKIT:
Maskit was founded out of an ideology to create work opportunities for new immigrants in the field of crafts. These worldwide artists created a tradition of uniqueness and authenticity never seen before and Maskit soon became a global phenomenon. At the age of 98, Dayan began working with Sharon Tal to reestablish Maskit and continue its legacy. Together, Dayan and Tal are driving the future of Maskit, infusing its rich heritage with modern fashion.

After the presentation, join us for a trunk show featuring Maskit clothing available for purchase.

Pre-registration is now closed. If you would like to attend the Women’s Philanthropy Spring Luncheon, please contact Joyce Lisiewski at 216-593-2845
