About the Director, Accounting:
Provide oversight of the financial and tax reporting and accounting for the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Supporting Foundation (MSF). Review and approval of journal entries and reports for other supporting foundations, endowment funds, and charitable trusts, as needed. Assist with the external audit process. Assist in daily operation and internal controls of the finance department.
The Director, Accounting is full-time and reports to the Senior Director, Accounting & Financial Reporting for MSF.
Essential Job Functions:
- Review and approve journal entries and quarterly reporting for MSF.
- Preparation/Review of annual financial statements and coordination of audit with external auditors and MSF Audit Committee.
- Preparation/Review of tax filings for MSF, including annual Form 990, 990-T and state returns.
- Oversight of daily operations of MSF, including cash management, wire approval, grant processing and processing/tracking of new investments. Provide backup for MSF Senior Accountant in these areas.
- Supervise MSF Senior Accountant.
- Review and approve journal entries for other supporting foundations, endowment funds and trusts.
- Review and approve journal entries for deposits and disbursements and provide backup in this area.
- Assist with the Federation’s external audit process.
- Other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:- Developed knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Team building skills; organizational and staff development skills preferred.
- Well-developed analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to read and interpret accounting reports, draft reports, business correspondence.
- Able to organize work, engage in a variety of tasks simultaneously and consistently meet deadlines.
- High degree of initiative and independent judgment.
- High degree of confidence with technology and experience with Office 365 applications, specifically Excel.
- High attention to detail, follow-up, self-motivated, proactive and solution focused.
- Ability to express self effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to function in a high volume, performance-oriented environment.
- Ability to tactfully and effectively deal with colleagues and the general public in a personable and professional manner.
- Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in accounting required.
- At least 5 years of work experience in accounting positions required.
- Experience in public accounting as an auditor or working in accounting with a non-profit organization preferred.
- Certified Public Accountant (“CPA”) preferred
- Experience with tax return preparation, especially Form 990 preferred.
- Experience with Financial Edge or NetSuite software a plus.
