Carol Leifer
Award-winning comedy writer
An award-winning writer and producer, best-selling author and standup comedian, Carol Leifer humbly describes herself as simply “someone who loves making people laugh.” Carol’s dazzling, observational style humor won her four Emmy nominations for writing on such acclaimed television shows as Seinfeld, The Larry Sanders Show and Saturday Night Live. She also won the prestigious Writer’s Guild Award for her work on television’s number one comedy show, Modern Family. Carol is currently a Writer/Producer for HBO’s Hacks and Curb Your Enthusiasm, reuniting with fellow Seinfeld alum Larry David. Carol has written two best-sellers based on her extraordinary life. When You Lie About Your Age, The Terrorists Win. Her latest, How to Succeed In Business Without Really Crying was lauded by The New York Times as “an unusual and endearing mix of show biz memoir and self-help book.”
Deeply committed to the Jewish community and her own Jewish upbringing on East Willison, Long Island, Carol is a Lion of Judah, honored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles for her active role.
Heather Schlang
Irene Zehman Volunteer Award Recipient
Heather Schlang is a community volunteer and Chair of Share What You Wear (SWYW), a project of the National Council of Jewish Women/Cleveland (NCJW/CLE). SWYW collects then distributes curated bags of clothing and toiletries to children in need or in crisis through school and agency social workers.
Combining her work ethic, which developed as an Ohio farm girl, and a degree in Business Administration from Baldwin-Wallace College, Heather works to reengineer NCJW/CLE projects to meet community needs.
Professionally, Heather worked as an operations analyst for several Cleveland banks before “retiring” to be a stay-at-home mom. But as her youngest son was finishing high school, she was ready to use her business background in the non-profit arena. Inspired by her hardworking parents and philanthropically minded in-laws, she sought a place where she could make a difference through direct community engagement. NCJW/CLE was an excellent fit because of the organization’s grassroots spirit and community connections.
Heather is inspired and encouraged every day by the passion and commitment of community volunteers and partners, who dedicate their days to helping improve the lives of women, children, and families. SWYW would not be possible without immense community support.
In honor of the 2022 Irene Zehman Volunteer Award recipient, Heather Schlang, please consider bringing full, unopened packages of pads or tampons for Share What You Wear to the MaIN Event.
The Irene Zehman Volunteer Award recognizes a woman, group of women, or a women’s organization whose efforts on behalf of the Cleveland Jewish community demonstrate the highest ideals and practices of volunteer service. This award was established in 1980 by Roslyn Z. Wolf and Judith Z. Sherman, both of blessed memory, in loving memory of their mother, Irene Zehman, who personified the attributes this award celebrates.
