The Campaign for Jewish Needs is the Cleveland Jewish community’s annual fundraising campaign that provides the critical dollars necessary to help keep our diverse, local community safe, strong, and welcoming, as well as serve the needs of the global Jewish community.

Volunteer for a Jewish Federation of Cleveland program and you never know what you’re going to get. Three years ago, I signed up for the Federation’s “Conversation Partners” program, or Medabrim in Hebrew. Developed by Mark Holz, volunteer chair of the Beit Shean subcommittee, the program aimed to support select Beit Shean residents in improving their English by practicing speaking the language.

The Jewish Federation of Cleveland announced today the first round Israel at 75 Microgrant recipients. Through this program, the Federation is funding a wide range of projects throughout the Cleveland Jewish community that are geared toward Israel programming as part of the organization’s year-long Israel at 75 initiative.

Since before Israel declared its independence in 1948 through contemporary times, Clevelanders have played crucial roles in the founding and prosperity of the Jewish state. The late Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver is the most prominent Clevelander involved in the creation of the Jewish homeland. But others, too, played a central role in its establishment and success today. Some of these people appeared in the Cleveland Jewish News’ Israel 60th special publication, with many more Clevelanders playing crucial roles in the next 15 years.
